Abstract

This study employed a quantitative research design in the form of a correlational comparative study. Its primary aim was to investigate the causal and consequential factors associated with community participation behaviors in promoting grassroots economic development. The research was grounded in the context that the grassroots economy represents a fundamental component of the national economic structure, and community participation is widely recognized as a key mechanism for achieving sustainable development. Despite this, numerous policies and development initiatives targeting grassroots economic
enhancement in Thailand have yet to yield the level of sustainable outcomes expected. One reason for this shortfall is the insufficient depth and quality of community participation. Therefore, the present study sought to analyze the causal structure of relationships among trait-based characteristics, situational factors, state-based psychological characteristics, and various dimensions of community participation. The overarching goal was to develop a systematic body of knowledge that could serve as a foundation for designing effective and sustainable grassroots economic development strategies.
The study had four specific objectives: (1) To examine the relationships between defined causal factors and community participation behaviors in promoting grassroots economic development. (2) To determine the magnitude and predictive power of causal factors influencing community participation behaviors. (3) To analyze both direct and indirect effects of the causal factors on participation behaviors using structural equation modeling. (4) To propose policy recommendations and practical measures for developing community participation behaviors in support of effective grassroots economic development.
The sample consisted of 634 residents drawn from 24 communities representing six regions of Thailand. These communities were located in provinces with the highest Gross Provincial Product (GPP) in each region and included both urban districts and local
districts/municipalities with established community enterprises. Sample size determination was conducted using the G*Power program with a 95% confidence level and a 5% acceptable margin of error. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed, combining stratified sampling, purposive selection, age-group stratification, and systematic sampling at the individual level. Research instruments were six-point rating scales developed in alignment with the conceptual framework. They included measures of four dimensions of community participation behaviors (participation in economic activities, expression of opinions, personal resource investment, and involvement in management), two state-based characteristics (perceived benefits/rewards and community attachment), three situational factors (channels of participation, access to information, and community leadership support), three trait-based characteristics (positive attitudes toward participation, self-confidence, and prosocial values),
and a demographic questionnaire. All instruments underwent expert validation for content validity and demonstrated reliability levels appropriate for advanced statistical analysis.
Data analysis was conducted using multiple statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the sample's characteristics. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were applied to examine the direction and strength of relationships among variables. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to test the predictive power of trait-based, situational, and state
based variables. Three-way ANOVA was employed to compare participation behaviors across different socio-demographic and contextual groups. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to examine the direct and indirect effects among latent variables across the various dimensions of participation, with model-fit indices serving to verify the adequacy of the model based on empirical data.
The findings revealed that: (1) All twelve variables were significantly and positively correlated at moderate to high levels, particularly between the four participation behavior dimensions and perceived benefits, community attachment, participation channels, information access, and positive attitudes toward participation—underscoring the importance of psychosocial and structural factors within the community. (2) The six-variable set consisting of three trait-based characteristics and three situational factors collectively predicted the two state-based characteristics—perceived benefits and community attachment—more effectively than either set of predictors alone, with predictive power increasing significantly in accordance with the hypotheses. (3) When considering the full model comprising eight predictors (trait-based, situational, and state-based factors), the model demonstrated strong predictive ability across all four dimensions of participation behaviors. It accounted for more
than 40% of the variance in community participation behaviors, indicating substantial explanatory power both academically and practically. (4) SEM results confirmed that traitbased and situational factors exerted both direct and indirect effects on participation behaviors, with indirect effects mediated notably through community attachment and perceived benefits. These two state-based characteristics served as key psychological mechanisms translating internal dispositions and external structural supports into observable participation behaviors.
Overall, the findings highlight that sustainable enhancement of community participation in grassroots economic development requires an integrated approach. This approach should include strengthening individual trait-based characteristics (e.g., attitudes,
self-confidence, prosocial values), improving structural and participatory channels, enhancing communication quality and information access, and designing participatory processes that elevate perceived benefits and foster deeper community attachment. The study contributes both academically—by addressing key knowledge gaps relating to causal modeling of
participation—and practically—by providing valuable empirical insights to inform policymaking and strategic design for government agencies, local administrations, and development partners working toward inclusive and sustainable grassroots economic advancement.
